Meet Heather Van Houten of "HVH Makeup & Hair."

I met Heather three years ago at a hair class in Beverly Hills. Within minutes of meeting, I knew we were going to be really good friends... and I was right! What I love most about Heather is her sense of humor and like myself, she does not take herself too seriously. She is fun, warm and I know I can count on her for anything.

Heather owns a VERY successful makeup and hair company in Tucson, Arizona, and I have been very fortunate to work with her on several occasions. Her talent, professionalism and drive inspire me on a daily basis. She is one of the best makeup artists in the business and so I decided to "interview" her and show off her incredible work.

What inspired you to become a makeup artist?

I think my love for art, theatre, and empowering women kind of come together perfectly in the profession "makeup artist."

How did you get started in the industry?

In the early 2000's I trained in theatre hair/makeup design while I worked at a beauty counter. However, it was not till 2012 where I began assisting an established artist in the wedding industry where I finally broke into it. From there, I created my business.

In your professional opinion, what is the biggest misconception about makeup and your job?

The biggest misconception about makeup is that there is one look or one makeup product that will work for everyone. For example, when someone from high school messages me on social media and writes "it looks like you are a big makeup artist now! can you tell me what foundation I should buy to look like your brides?" And the answer is "you are making my brain hurt." -kidding- Or when a client shows me her inspiration picture of Adelle, but she has small features and tanned skin. I have to be the bad guy and break the news to her that Adelle's look is so successful because of her alabaster skin, huge eyes, lips, and cheek bones.

The biggest misconception about artists is that we are not as busy as other vendors, such as photographers and venues. All too often I hear "I can't believe you are sold out! I thought I was ahead of schedule! What do I do?" Good vendors in your area will sell out dates fast. Do not hesitate to book a makeup artist that you are interested in as soon as you can. We sell out just as fast as any other vendor you need.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

The biggest challenge facing me and my career is struggling to find a work - life balance. This business would take every minute of every day if I allowed it.

What's the one beauty trend you wish would go away? Why?

I wish eyebrows on fleek and and heavy obvious contouring would take a hike. I cringe when clients come back to me after I do their makeup and request that I block in their brows and pencil in a furrow.

What is your favorite “look” to do on brides?

My favorite look for my brides is glowing radiant skin, a smokey light neutral eye, a perfect set of lashes, and a creamy pink-nude lip.

If you were stranded on an island but could have 3 beauty products, what would they be and why can't you live without them?

1st and foremost, I would want to make sure I had a survival kit (like a tarp, means of fire, and a knife). Vanity would be the least of my concerns if I was stranded on a island except for my morbid excitement to lose weight through malnourishment. My chosen beauty products would be: Aquaphor Lip Balm, La Mer Broad Spectrum Suncreen, and Obagi Foamacleanse Wash. I would literally refuse any makeup products. What's the point? lol!!

How do you relax and unwind from the amazing business you have created?

I relax by going out to dinner or brunch with a close friend and having a martini or glass of wine. Sometimes a nice bubble bath with a luxurious bath balm from Lush and listening to Audible hits the spot too!

Who is your celebrity crush?

Leonardo DiCaprio. He is just so rugged, progressive and talented.... too bad he only dates models. lol!!!

If you were not a professional makeup artist and stylist, what other career do you picture yourself doing?

I really do not know what I would do if I were not a MUA. Perhaps a broker or CPA? Money matters really do fascinate me.
